We were discussing books on day one, and I found it quite curious–as Tom eventually pointed out–that we were calling these new things books. In my mind, they’re not. Books are made of pages, physical ones, and this new product we’re discussing and making, this fluid medium, is not a book. eBook, sure. But isn’t there a reason we’ve given eBooks a new name? They’re electronic, and the world wants to distinguish them from physical books with physical pages that you have to pick up and put back down again. One day, we may come up with a new name for the physical book. We’ll make a retronym (NYTimes article on the Retronym) for these glorious anachronisms ten years from now.
